About Us

There is a long history of sterile, non-sterile and aseptic pharmaceutical manufacturing in Cardiff hospitals. The service was centralised and rationalised  between 1995 and 2005 driven by improvements in facilities and equipment, introduction of new technologies and reorganisation of health services. During this period the non-sterile manufacturing unit and Quality Control laboratories were located at the St Mary’s Hospital, a former isolation hospital.

In 2008 the Welsh Government funded the centralisation of the manufacturing and Quality Control laboratories the current, modern, purpose built facility, in Heath, Cardiff close to the University Hospital of Wales. The new St Mary’s Pharmaceutical Unit was opened by the then Welsh Government Health Minter, Edwina Hart in 2009.

Today we produce a wide range of pharmaceutical products and offer services to the pharmaceutical industry continuing to make sure a patients medication needs are met using our experts knowledge and skills. These products include bespoke contract manufacturing, our current range of stock products and extemporaneous or “specials” products on request. The unit remains committed to quality and patient safety researching and  securing investment for introduction of novel technologies.
